Step 2: Choose Inside or Outside Mount
Shutters mounted on the inside of the window frame provide a sleek and clean design. On an inside mount the frame will sit back in the window casing so that it will emphasize the actual size of the window. Depending on your frame style choice this mounting option may allow your window molding to be visible (refer to step 5 for more detail). If you want your blind to fit flush with the window molding you need to make sure you have enough depth in your window to accommodate the depth of your shutter.
Shutters mounted on the outside of the window frame provide the illusion of a longer and wider window and it can help in hiding an unattractive window. On an outside mount a shutter can be mounted either on the window molding itself or above and beyond the window molding. An outside mount always provides for greater privacy and light control. An outside mount may be your only option if the window is not deep enough to contain at least the shutter mounting.
Inside Mount
Outside Mount
Step 3: Select Louver Size
Louvers are the horizontal slats that comprise the central structure of the shutter and are angled to admit light and air, but to keep out rain, direct sunshine, and noise. The angle of the louvers is adjustable and they are available in a range of sized from 2.5 - 4.5 inches. Smaller louvers, used in "plantation" style shutters, provide a traditional design while larger widths are perfect for high-ceilinged rooms or a more contemporary setting. Choosing larger louvers will provide you with a better viewing clearance when in the open position. Size comparisons may be viewed below, please note that note that available louver size will vary between collections.
 Open position view comparison:
Louver size options may vary by shutter collection. Please see visit the product detail page to view available options for that collection.
Step 4: Choose Shutter Type
There are many different shutter types available. Use our guide below to help you choose the options that best fits your desired application. Some shutter types may not be available in your style/mounting preference. Note: Mouse over or click on an image to see more views.
Standard Folding Shutters Standard folding shutters are the most popular choice and fit most windows. They are available as single panels or bi-folding panels, depending on your window size. These panels can be folded flat against the walls around and opening. Single panels are the most popular and maximize the light and view through a window. Bi-fold panels are more traditional and can swing open when there is furniture that limits the room in front of a window.
Café Style Shutters Café Style Shutters, also referred to as "Half-Height Shutters," are used in a setting where you want an unobstructed view on the top of your window with covering for light control/privacy on the bottom. Often combined with drapery or another shade such as cellulars to create a unique and stylish custom design. Love the look but need more privacy? You may want to consider Double Hung Shutters.
T-Post Shutters T-Posts are designed for wide windows that require additional support as a decorative post is placed to split the shutters into smaller sections creating strength and allowing for smooth operation. Adding a T-Post is only recommended for windows over 96". T-Posts are also frequently used when the existing window frame has a Mullion (vertical dividers which provide added structural support). In this case, when ordering, it is important to add notes that specify the position of the T-Post to ensure that the mullion will be covered.
French Door Shutters French Door Shutters are typically mounted "outside" of the glass opening on the popular French doors found in many living areas and patio entrances. This specialty Slimline frame can be extended or cut out to accommodate traditional style door handles or kept as a solid panel. A 1" frame spacer may be required for adequate window clearance when mounting the Slimline frame. Please consult with one of our blinds specialist for more information about ordering French Door Shutters. Call 1.800.548.5711, e-mail, or click to chat.
Bi-Pass Slider Shutters Bi-Pass Shutters are great for sliding glass doors, room dividers and closets. The individual panels can be configured to slide to the left, right or to open from the center and will slide behind each other when in the open position. Choose one to four panels depending on the size of your opening. Bi-Pass Slider Shutter is very popular because it does not require room in front of the window/door for the panels to swing open. Steve’s offers "Double Bi-Pass" which allows for the louvers to tilt even when the panels are stacked to one side and "Bi-Pass with Bottom Track" which will help guide your shutters for smooth and easy operation.
Double Hung Shutters Double Hung Shutters combine a timeless and elegant style with maximum light and privacy control. Also called "tier on tier shutters" these shutters are extremely versatile: Installed to divide your window into sections horizontally giving you the option to not only operate your Louvers independently for precise light control but to also open the panels of the upper half while the lower remains closed, vice versa and to clear the entire window for viewing.
Bi-Fold Slider Shutters Like the Bi-Pass Slider the Bi-Fold is an excellent choice for closets, pantries, room dividers, doors and large windows. Available with numerous configuration options, the Bi-Fold is mounted on a smooth track and slides easily for a complete, clear view when opened. When in the open position the panels will be stacked on the right, left or both sides, depending on your custom configuration, be sure to allot for this when measuring your space. This is a very popular, low maintenance option that is extremely durable and is perfect for a section of your home that is frequently used.
Step 5: Choose Frame Style
Steve’s offers a wide range of innovative frame designs. Use our guide below to help you choose the perfect look to fit your style. Some frames may not be available in your style/mounting preference. Frame types are separated by collection. Please see frame details for more information. Note: Mouse over frame image to view side details. Use links below frame to see measurement specifications.

Step 6: Select Number of Frame Sides
Choosing the number of sides to order for framing your shutters will depend on the style of shutter you choose and your existing window type. For example, when ordering a cafe style shutter you may only need two frame sides, one on the left and one on the right. Another example is when ordering shutters for a door or closet, in this case you generally will want to order a three sided frame as you will not need a frame where the door meets the floor. See below for more details.
4 Sided FramePerfect for a window with a lower sill. Can be used on inside or outside mounts and with single or multiple panels.
4 Sided FrameShown without sill or molding. Can be used on inside or outside mounts and with single or multiple panels. Also an excellent option for French Doors.
3 Sided FrameOften used for windows with protruding lower sills or for windows with a lower opening and closing crank mechanism. Also often used for shutters placed in doorways.
2 Sided FrameMost frequently used with cafe style shutters but also great for doors or closets with crown molding at the top.

Step 9: Select Shutter Color
Take your time when selecting the color for your shutters for your home and be sure to take several factors into account. First, decide whether your want a neutral colored shutter or a stained shutter- Steve’s offers a great selection of both! This choice will also affect your shutter type, as Faux Wood Shutters are only available in neutral colors. Be sure that the color you choose compliments the style and decor of your home and that it accents your existing colors
harmoniously. Take into consideration any existing moldings and trims in your home. Going with a more traditional stain will add elegance to any decor. Selecting a neutral white or off-white shutter would be perfect for the contemporary or modern dwelling. Step 11: Tilt Wands, Frame Spacers & Mount Magnets
You are nearing the end of the custom shutter design process! In this last step you are able to select a few upgrades to personalize your perfect shutter to fit your exact needs. See below for an outline of these options but keep in mind that there are even more custom upgrades available to you. See below the "Design your Custom Shutter" tabbed section for more detail and be sure to also check out the photo gallery below for more inspiration. A tilt wand is the vertical bar attached to the louvers that allows you to easily open and close your shutters. Tilt wands, also sometimes called "Tilt Rods" may be attached to the front panel on the center or offset to the rear side of the panel to allow for a completely clear view. The tilt rod in the front captures the traditional shutter look while the "clear view" option provides a clean & modern look. Note: A "split tilter" is required for panels over 60" in height. See "Steve’s Recommended Options" section below for more information.

Frame spacers are used, either in addition to a frame or alone, to project the shutter exactly 1" forward when louvers need extra clearance to operate. The frame spacer is also helpful when mounting beyond your existing molding, to clear door handles when shutters are mounted on French Doors or when mounting a standard shutter onto a sliding door. See and example of how frame spacers are used for an outside mounted and inside mounted shutter.

Please Note: There are special measuring instructions for the following collections: Grand View Poly, PolyClad, Solid PolyCore and all Real Wood collections. If you are ordering from any of these collections please click here for instructions.
Inside Mounted Shutters 1. Measure exact window width at top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest measurement to 1⁄16". For windows with mullions (vertical dividers which provide added structural support), the panel width will remain the same if ordered with a t-post, or without.
2. Measure height in three places (left, middle & right) and record the smallest measurement to 1⁄8". If ordering two shutter panels to be placed next to each other, please be sure that the heights of the panels are equal. If they are not this may result in a difference in louver count or rail size. 3. Measure the window diagonally in two places. If the two diagonal dimensions are not equal, we recommend that you choose to mount your shutter with a frame as opposed to choosing "no-frame" to avoid uneven light gaps. If the diagonal measurements are more than 3⁄8" off then we recommend choosing an outside mount.
Outside-Mounted Shutters - Window with Existing Trim 1. Measure from outside of trim to outside of trim in three places. Ensure the frame does not extend into the opening. Record the largest measurement to 1⁄16". If the chosen frame extends past the edge of the trim, then measure the width from outside of trim to outside of trim in three places (top, middle & bottom). Add it to the measurement that the frame extends past the trim on each side. If installing around trim: Measure from outside of trim to outside of trim in three places (top, middle & bottom). Record the largest measurement to 1⁄16". 2. Measure from outside of trim to outside of trim in three places. Ensure the frame does not extend into the opening. Record the largest measurement to 1⁄8". If the chosen frame extends past the edge of the trim, then measure the height from outside of trim to outside of trim in three places (top, middle & bottom). Add it to the measurement that the frame extends past the trim on each side. If installing around trim: Measure from outside of trim to outside of trim in three places(left, middle & right). Record the largest measurement to 1⁄8". Please note: If ordering two shutter panels to be placed next to each other, please be sure that the heights of the panels are equal. If they are not this may result in a difference in louver count or rail size.
Outside-Mounted Shutters - Window with No Trim 1. Measure the inside width in three places (top, middle & bottom). Take the largest measurement to 1⁄16" and make sure to add additional to allow for the frame selected. 2. Measure the inside height in three places (left, middle & right). Take the largest measurement to 1⁄8" and make sure to add additional to allow for the frame selected. Please note: If ordering two shutter panels to be placed next to each other, please be sure that the heights of the panels are equal. If they are not this may result in a difference in louver count or rail size. Note: A divider rail is required for shutter panels 60" or more in height with a maximum of 50” between the middle of the divider rail and either top or bottom rail.
