Step 2: Choose Inside or Outside Mount
Shutters mounted on the inside of the window frame provide a sleek and clean design. On an inside mount the frame will sit back in the window casing so that it will emphasize the actual size of the window. If you want your blind to fit flush with the window molding you need to make sure you have enough depth in your window to accommodate the depth of your shutter.
Shutters mounted on the outside of the window frame provide the illusion of a longer and wider window and it can help in hiding an unattractive window. On an outside mount a shutter can be mounted either on the window molding itself or above and beyond the window molding. An outside mount always provides for greater privacy and light control. An outside mount may be your only option if the window is not deep enough to contain at least the shutter mounting.

Step 3: Select Shutter Color
Take your time when selecting the color for your Norman shutters and be sure to take several factors into account. First, decide whether your want a neutral colored shutter or a stained shutter- Steve’s offers a great selection of both! This choice will also affect your shutter type, as Faux Wood Shutters are only available in neutral colors. Be sure that the color you choose compliments the style and decor of your home and that it accents your existing colors
harmoniously. Take into consideration any existing moldings and trims in your home. Going with a more traditional stain will add elegance to any decor. Selecting a neutral white or off-white shutter would be perfect for the contemporary or modern dwelling. Step 4: Choose Shutter Type
There are many different shutter types available. Use our guide below to help you choose the options that best fits your desired application. Some shutter types may not be available in your style/mounting preference. Note: Mouse over or click on an image to see more views.
 Rectangular
Standard rectangular shutters are the most popular choice and fit most windows. They are available as single panels or bi-folding panels, depending on your window size. Single panels are the most popular option and maximize the light and view through a window. Bi-fold panels are more traditional and can swing open when there is furniture that limits the room in front of a window.
Café Style Café Style Shutters, also refered to as "Half-Height Shutters" are used in a setting where you want unobstructed view on the top of your window with covering for light control and privacy on the bottom. Often combined with drapery or another shade such as cellulars to create a unique and stylish custom design. Love the look but need more privacy? You may want to consider Double Hung Shutters.
Track Track Shutters are great for sliding glass doors, room divider, closets and large windows. The individual panels can be configured to slide to the left, right or to open from the center and will slide behind each other when in the open position. Choose two to four panels depending on the size of your opening. Bi-Pass Sllider Shutter is very popular because it does not require room in front of the window/door for the panels to swing open.
French Door French Door Shutters are typically mounted “outside” of the glass opening on the popular French doors found in many living areas and patio entrances. Please consult with one of our blinds specialist for more information about ordering French Door Shutters.Call 1.800.548.5711, e-mail, or click to chat.
Double Hung Double Hung Shutters combine a timesless and elegant style with maximum light and privacy control. Also called “tier on tier shutters” they are extremely versitile: Installed to divide your window into sections horizontally giving you the option to not only operate your Louvers independantly for presise light control but to also open the panels of the upper half while the lower remains closed, vice versa and to clear the entire window for viewing.
Step 5: Select Louver Size
Louvers are the horizontal slats that comprise the central structure of the shutter and are angled to admit light and air, but to keep out rain, direct sunshine, and noise. The angle of the louvers is adjustable and they are available in a range of sized from 1 7/8 - 4 1/2 inches. Smaller louvers, used in "plantation" style shutters, provide a traditional design while larger widths are perfect for high-ceilinged rooms or a more contemporary setting. Choosing larger louvers will provide you with a better viewing clearance when in the open position. Size comparisons may be viewed below, please note that note that available louver size will vary between collections.
Louver size options may vary by shutter collection. Please see visit the product detail page to view available options for that collection.
Step 6: Choose Frame Style

Step 10: Additional Options
You are nearing the end of the custom shutter design process! In this last step you are able to select a few options to personalize your perfect shutter to fit your exact needs. See below for an outline of these options but keep in mind that there are even more custom upgrades available to you. See below the "Design your Custom Shutter" tabbed section for more detail and be sure to also check out the photo gallery below for more inspiration.
T-Post
T-Posts are designed for wide windows that require additional support as a decorative post is placed to split the shutters into smaller sections creating strength and allowing for smooth operation. Adding a T-Post is only recommended for windows over 96". T-Posts are also frequently used when the existing window frame has a Mullion (vertical dividers which provide added structural support). In this case, when ordering, it is important to add notes that specify the position of the T-Post to ensure that the mullion will be covered.
Tilt Rod
A tilt rod is the vertical bar attached to the louvers that allows you to easily open and close your shutters. Tilt rods, also sometimes called "Tilt Wands" may be attached to the front panel on the center or offset to the side of the panel to allow for a completely clear view. The tilt rod in the front captures the traditional shutter look while the "clear view" option provides a clean & modern look. Note: A "split tilter" is required for panels over 60" in height. See "Steve’s Recommended Options" section below for more information.Standard - In the middle of the panel on front side (default).Offset - On the front side of the panel and at 1" from the louver ends on the hinged side. Invisible Tilt - Louver tilting system embedded within panel stile Not available for 1 7/8 ” louver. Panels over 48" will have a split InvisibleTilt tilt rod.

Getting Started
Norman Window Fashions suggest that a metal measure tape be used.
Measure Procedures
• To determine that an Inside Mount shutter will properly fit in the window, a Squareness Check must be taken. Measure diagonally between the corners. If the difference between the two measurements is greater that ¼”, then a
Outside Mount Shutter is required.
• To find the Width, take 3 measurements at the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening.
• To find the Height, take 3 measurements at the left, center, and right of the window opening.
• Provide the SMALLEST of three horizontal & verticalmeasurements for an Inside Mount (IM).
• Provide the LARGEST of three horizontal & vertical measurements for an Outside Mount (OM).
• Ensure that there is sufficient flat mounting space around the window opening for Outside Mount frames as well as depth clearance in the window so that Inside Mount frames and the selected louver size will operate without obstructions.
